Reading FC’s badge is a round crest with “Reading Football Club” around the outside, “Est. 1871” at the bottom, a central old-style football, blue-and-white hooped sections, a crown, and the Maiwand Lion.
The current crest was introduced for the 1998–99 season, around the club’s move from Elm Park to the Madejski Stadium. It uses Reading’s club colours and adds two local symbols: the crown for the Royal County of Berkshire, and the Maiwand Lion as a symbol of Reading itself.
The lion refers to the Maiwand Lion war memorial in Forbury Gardens, one of Reading’s best-known local landmarks. The crown connects to the club’s “Royals” nickname, which replaced the older “Biscuitmen” identity linked to the town’s Huntley & Palmers biscuit industry.
The old panelled football in the centre gives the badge a traditional football feel, while the blue-and-white quarters reflect Reading’s long-running hooped shirt identity. The 1871 date marks Reading FC’s foundation, making the club one of the older professional football clubs in England.
