Besta deild karla is the top division of Icelandic football. Founded in 1912 as the Icelandic Championship, it currently features 12 clubs and is usually played during the spring and summer months. The defending Besta deild champions are Víkingur Reykjavík, winners of the 2025 season, while the 2026 season is currently in progress. The clubs with the most Icelandic top-flight titles include KR Reykjavík, Valur and ÍA. Each season, clubs compete for the national title, with promotion and relegation linking the league to the second tier of Icelandic football.
