Bradford City’s badge uses a claret-and-amber shield with the large initials “BC,” a bantam standing above it, “AFC” inside the shield, and a scroll reading “The Bantams” below.
The bantam is the club’s defining identity. Bradford City historian John Dewhirst traces the nickname to November 1908, when it was introduced to rally the team during a difficult First Division season; the small but fierce bird suited the idea of fighting spirit.
The claret and amber colours were inherited from Manningham FC when the rugby club switched to association football and became Bradford City in 1903. Bradford City’s crest history has also used civic symbols, but the Bantams identity was relaunched on the club badge in the early 1980s and remains the club’s best-known visual mark.
The current crest keeps that identity direct: the bantam mascot, claret-and-amber stripes, the “BC AFC” initials, and the nickname that separates Bradford City from other English clubs.
