Russia National Team badge meaning and origin

Russia’s national team badge uses the state coat of arms: a gold double-headed eagle with three crowns, a sceptre and orb, and a red central shield showing Saint George on horseback spearing a dragon.

The double-headed eagle is Russia’s historic state emblem, restored after the Soviet era and formally adopted for the Russian Federation in the 1990s. The central Saint George shield is also part of the national coat of arms, connecting the football badge directly to Russian heraldry and state identity.

By using the coat of arms almost directly, Russia’s football badge presents the national team as an official representative of the country rather than as a separate federation brand. The team is governed by the Russian Football Union, founded in 1912.
