VfL Wolfsburg bring back the Zinnenwappen as historic battlement crest returns after 24 years

VfL Wolfsburg restored one of the club’s most important historic symbols on 9 May 2026, announcing the return of the Zinnenwappen — the battlement crest built around a castle-inspired “W” — before a packed Volkswagen Arena ahead of the Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich.

The new official crest is a modernised version of the emblem used before 2002 and which continued to appear prominently among supporters after it disappeared from the club’s primary branding. Its return was celebrated in the stadium as more than a logo update: for many Wolfsburg fans, it marked the official comeback of the symbol they had continued to identify with for more than two decades.

A crest returned to the supporters

Wolfsburg did not introduce the Zinnenwappen through a standard digital reveal. The club unveiled it at the Volkswagen Arena, with supporter choreography, the crest displayed inside the stadium and the men’s team wearing it on their shirts for the match against Bayern Munich.

The reaction reflected the unusual relationship between the badge and the club’s fan culture. Although Wolfsburg had used a different primary logo since 2002, the battlement-style W remained visible on flags and banners in the stands. In its official announcement, VfL acknowledged that the Zinnenwappen had “never truly gone” because it continued to hold such a strong place among supporters.

Fan representative Marvin Minner said supporters had campaigned for the return of the battlements for more than 20 years, describing the decision as a historic and emotional moment for the fan scene.

What is the Wolfsburg Zinnenwappen?

The returning VfL Wolfsburg logo is formed around a stylised green “W” with three battlement-like shapes at its upper points. The German term Zinnenwappen refers directly to these battlements, which evoke a castle or fortified wall.

That visual reference connects the club with Wolfsburg itself, whose name and civic identity are linked to Wolfsburg Castle. The badge therefore combines the initial “W” with a symbol of the city’s origin and heritage.

The 2026 version is not an unchanged reproduction of the former crest. Wolfsburg said the emblem was carefully refined rather than redesigned: proportions and spacing were balanced, the battlements were made clearer and more consistent, the central tower was slightly adjusted and the outer circle was standardised for stronger use across digital and physical applications.

The wider identity introduces a colour palette based on dark green, white and light green, together with updated typography and visual elements derived from the battlement shape.

From the 2002 logo back to the battlement crest

The Zinnenwappen was central to Wolfsburg’s identity for decades before the club introduced a more modern logo in 2002, around the move into the Volkswagen Arena. That outgoing badge used a smooth green “W” within an open circular form.

While the 2002 crest accompanied the club through an important period of its modern history, a significant part of the support continued to associate Wolfsburg more strongly with the historic battlements. VfL’s official brand presentation describes the return as a decision shaped by the fan scene, club representatives, the city and other stakeholders.

The club has framed the new crest not as a nostalgic copy of a former badge, but as a modern identity built from the symbol supporters had never stopped using.

A return announced during a difficult season

The Zinnenwappen was unveiled while Wolfsburg were fighting to preserve their Bundesliga status. The club entered the final weeks of the 2025/26 season in the relegation battle and was ultimately relegated through the play-off against SC Paderborn later in May.

That sporting context gives the new crest a particularly significant starting point. The return of the historic badge offered supporters a powerful symbol of continuity during a difficult moment, and it will now represent Wolfsburg as the club begins its next chapter in the second tier.

When will VfL Wolfsburg use the new crest?

The Zinnenwappen became VfL Wolfsburg’s official central emblem from 9 May 2026, with the transition beginning across the club’s communications, stadium environment, merchandise and wider visual identity.

The men’s and women’s teams began wearing the new crest during the final matches of the 2025/26 season. However, the club confirmed that its standard home and away kits for 2026/27 will still carry the outgoing logo because of football kit production lead times.

Wolfsburg plans to introduce an additional shirt featuring the Zinnenwappen during the 2026/27 season. From 2027/28, the returned battlement crest is scheduled to appear regularly on the club’s official playing kits.
