Rayo Vallecano’s crest is a white, gold-edged shield crossed by a bold red diagonal lightning bolt, with the initials R, V and M down the right side and the coat of arms of Vallecas in the upper left. The red “rayo” visually echoes the club’s name – rayo meaning “thunderbolt” in Spanish – and has been present since the first 1924 emblem, where it already cut across the shield in the same direction.
The Vallecas shield, added in 1947, underlines the team’s roots in the working-class Madrid district. The letters were updated in 1995 to RVM to match the current name, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, but the basic Swiss-style shield, gold border and diagonal bolt have remained almost unchanged through every redesign.
