AEK Athens (ΑΕΚ Αθήνα) badge meaning and origin

AEK Athens’ badge is a yellow shield with a black border, a black double-headed eagle in the centre, the stylised initials “A.E.K” across the white top panel and “F.C.” at the bottom. The eagle is the dominant element, set against the club’s traditional yellow-and-black colours.

AEK stands for Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos, meaning Athletic Union of Constantinople. The club was founded in Athens in 1924 by Greek refugees from Constantinople, and the double-headed eagle was adopted as a direct link to the Byzantine Empire and the club’s Constantinopolitan roots.

The yellow and black palette also comes from that Byzantine and Constantinople heritage. Over time, AEK’s eagle has been refined into a cleaner modern crest, but the central idea has remained the same: a football identity built around memory, exile, and the historic symbol of Constantinople.
