Panathinaikos (Παναθηναϊκός) badge meaning and origin

Panathinaikos’ badge is a green-and-white roundel with the club’s Greek name, “Παναθηναϊκός,” around the outer ring, the year “1908” at the bottom and a large green shamrock in the centre. Two small stars sit inside the ring, reinforcing the circular, traditional club-emblem layout.

Panathinaikos was founded in Athens in 1908 by Giorgos Kalafatis. The club first used white and red, then changed to green and white in 1910. In 1918, the shamrock was adopted as the club emblem, becoming the defining symbol of Panathinaikos’ identity.

The shamrock is officially described by the club as a symbol of good luck and balance between body, soul and spirit. Since the professional era, it has usually been placed inside a circular badge with the club initials or name and the 1908 foundation date, keeping the Trifýlli — “Shamrock” — identity at the centre of the crest.
