Ipswich Town badge meaning and origin

Ipswich Town’s badge is a castellated red-and-blue shield topped with turret shapes, echoing Wolsey’s Gate in the town, with a powerful white Suffolk Punch horse standing over an old-style football and two wavy lines beneath.

The horse is a Suffolk Punch draft breed native to the county, chosen as a symbol of local strength and identity, while the waves represent the rivers Gipping and Orwell flowing to the North Sea and anchoring the crest in the port town’s maritime setting.

This composition dates back to a 1972 supporters’ competition won by club treasurer John Gammage and was refined in 1995, but its core trio of turrets, horse and waves has become a classic, region-specific Football League emblem.
