Hull City badge meaning and origin

Hull City’s badge is a modern amber shield with a black border, featuring a detailed roaring tiger’s head in profile, the words “HULL CITY” above it and the founding year “1904” below. The tiger is a direct visual of the club’s “Tigers” nickname, first coined in 1905 in reference to their black-and-amber striped shirts.

Earlier crests ranged from the three crowns of Kingston upon Hull’s civic arms in the 1930s to a series of tiger-head designs used from 1947 onwards, with a controversial 2014 shield that dropped the club name entirely.

The current crest, introduced for the 2019–20 season after a supporter-led redesign, restores “Hull City” to the badge while keeping the fierce tiger motif that has long defined the club’s identity.
