Stoke City badge meaning and origin

Stoke City’s new badge uses a gold-edged shield divided into red, white and black panels. It features the “Stoke City” name in white on a red header, the year “1863” in gold, red-and-white stripes, a Staffordshire knot and a white bottle kiln.

The 1863 date refers to the club’s foundation as Stoke Ramblers, while the red-and-white stripes reflect Stoke City’s traditional home colours. The Staffordshire knot connects the badge to the county of Staffordshire, and the bottle kiln represents Stoke-on-Trent’s pottery heritage, the source of the club’s famous “Potters” nickname.

The design revives the spirit of Stoke’s 1977–1992 crest, which also used local symbols and red-and-white striping. The new version was chosen after supporter consultation and is set to debut from the 2026–27 season.
