The league is played as a double round-robin (30 matchdays), and the bottom two clubs in the final table are relegated directly to Primera B each season. Continental qualification: 4 spots for the Copa Libertadores (league champion, runner-up, third place and Copa Chile winners) and 4 for the Copa Sudamericana, awarded to the next best-placed teams in the overall table.
