Sheffield United’s badge is a red, black and white roundel with “Sheffield United F.C.” around the outer ring and the year “1889” at the bottom. In the centre, two crossed white blades sit on a black field beneath a white Yorkshire rose.
The crossed blades refer directly to Sheffield’s historic cutlery and steel-making industry, and also connect to the club’s famous nickname, “The Blades.” The Yorkshire rose places the club within its county identity, while 1889 marks the year Sheffield United Football Club was founded at Bramall Lane.
The badge’s core identity was introduced in the 1970s, when the club moved away from earlier city-arms-style designs. Its simple combination of blades, rose and founding year has since become one of English football’s most recognisable local emblems.
