Portsmouth’s badge is a blue-and-white roundel with “PORTSMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB” encircling a shield that carries a white crescent beneath an eight-pointed star and the date 1898. The star and crescent are lifted directly from the city’s coat of arms, an azure shield borne for more than 700 years and long associated with the motto “Heaven’s Light Our Guide.”
Tradition links the device to King Richard I, who is said to have granted Portsmouth a version of the emblem after his Crusades, though historians now treat that story cautiously.
First adopted on a Pompey shirt in 1913, the symbols have survived anchor-and-sword experiments in the 1980s and were sharpened again in the 2018 crest refresh.
