PAOK’s badge is a black-and-white shield with a gold outer edge, the year “1926” at the top, the Greek initials “ΠΑΟΚ” and a black double-headed eagle in the centre. The eagle carries a smaller black-and-white striped shield on its chest, echoing the club’s colours and football identity.
PAOK was founded in Thessaloniki in 1926 by Greek refugees from Constantinople. The club’s full name, Panthessalonikeios Athlitikos Omilos Konstantinoupoliton, means Pan-Thessalonian Athletic Club of Constantinopolitans, and the double-headed eagle directly reflects that Byzantine and Constantinopolitan heritage.
The emblem was adopted in 1929 after AEK Thessaloniki was absorbed into PAOK. Unlike the open-winged Byzantine eagle, PAOK’s eagle is traditionally shown with closed wings, a sign of mourning for the lost homelands of the club’s refugee founders. The gold outline was later added as a further reference to Byzantine heritage.
