FC Barcelona badge meaning and origin

FC Barcelona’s badge is a distinctive pot-shaped shield with a gold outline, split into three main zones: the top quarters show the red cross of Saint George and the four red bars of the Senyera, the centre band carries the “FCB” initials, and the base combines blaugrana stripes with a golden ball.

Chosen in a 1910 members’ competition and based on a design by player Carles Comamala, the crest has only been tweaked aesthetically since. The St George cross and Catalan flag come directly from Barcelona’s medieval coat of arms, underlining the club’s role as a civic and Catalan symbol.

Under Franco the Catalan bars disappeared and the initials were hispanicised to “C.F.B.”, but the traditional elements and “FCB” lettering were restored after the dictatorship, reinforcing the badge’s political and cultural weight.
