Borussia Dortmund’s badge is one of the simplest in elite football: a bright yellow disc with the black letters “BVB” above the small “09,” all framed by a thin black ring.
“BVB” abbreviates Ballspielverein Borussia, the first part of the club’s official name, while “09” marks its founding year, 1909.
The word “Borussia” itself is the neo-Latin for Prussia but, in Dortmund’s case, was taken directly from a local Borussia brewery whose sign inspired the founders. Circular crests with this basic “BVB 09” layout have been in use since 1919, with the now-familiar roundel fixed in its modern form in 1993 and only lightly tweaked since, turning a blunt piece of typography into a globally recognisable symbol of the Schwarzgelben.
