The cross is the ancient emblem of Milan, associated with Saint Ambrose and long used on the city flag, so its presence roots the crest firmly in local civic identity. The stripes reflect the club colours chosen in 1899 by English founder Herbert Kilpin, with red symbolising fiery passion and black the fear they hoped to inspire in opponents—hence the “Diavolo” nickname.

For a time in the late 20th century a stand-alone red devil crest even appeared on kits, but the current badge, introduced in the 1990s, has settled as a modernised take on Milan’s earliest emblems.
