Spain National Team badge meaning and origin

Spain’s current national team badge is a tall red shield with a fine golden border, featuring a monochrome version of the Spanish coat of arms topped by a royal crown, with “1909” and a circular RFEF monogram at the base, and a single gold star above. The design essentially lifts the state coat of arms – the quartered shield of the historic kingdoms, the Pillars of Hercules and the crown – signalling that the team plays as a direct representative of the Spanish state. The “1909” marks the founding year of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, whose initials appear in the roundel. The lone star, introduced after the 2010 World Cup, commemorates Spain’s only world title in line with FIFA’s convention for champions’ crests.
