Shakhtar Donetsk (Шахтар) badge meaning and origin

Shakhtar Donetsk’s badge is a tall black-and-white shield with an orange flame-like upper section, the Ukrainian word “Шахтар” across the centre, the founding year 1936, and two crossed miner’s hammers near the bottom.

The club’s name means “miner” in Ukrainian, directly linking the badge to Donetsk and the coal-mining identity of the Donbas region. Shakhtar’s official crest explanation also connects the orange-and-black colour contrast to sunlight and shadow in the mines, reinforcing the club’s industrial roots.

Shakhtar was founded in 1936 as Stakhanovets and later adopted the Shakhtar name in the mid-1940s. The current crest was introduced in 2007, bringing back the crossed hammers and using the Ukrainian club name, while keeping the orange-and-black identity that has defined the club since the 1960s.
