Olympique de Marseille (OM) badge meaning and origin

Olympique de Marseille’s badge is a light-blue interlaced “O” and “M” monogram topped by a single gold star, with the club motto “DROIT AU BUT” (“Straight to the goal”) written below in gold. The entwined initials go back to the club’s earliest crest at the end of the 19th century, when founder René Dufaure de Montmirail adapted his own seal for OM’s badge, and have remained the constant core of every redesign since.

The motto, inherited from the club’s rugby roots, has accompanied the crest for over a century. The gold star was added after OM’s 1993 Champions League victory, marking their status as the first French club to win the competition.
