Iraq’s badge is a white shield with a black border, the word “IRAQ” at the top and a black star above. The centre uses the Iraqi flag layout: a red horizontal band, a white middle section with green Arabic script, and a black lower band.
The flag elements connect the badge directly to Iraqi national identity. The green Arabic text is the “Allahu Akbar” inscription used on the national flag, while the red, white and black colours come from the same flag design.
The Iraq Football Association was founded in 1948, joined FIFA in 1950 and later became part of the Asian Football Confederation. Iraq’s national team has used several badge styles over time, including flag-based crests in the 1980s and 2000s.
The current shield-style badge was revealed in 2020. The star above the crest is associated with Iraq’s 2007 AFC Asian Cup title, the country’s most celebrated football achievement.
