VfL Wolfsburg badge meaning and origin

VfL Wolfsburg’s badge is a minimalist white roundel with a bright green, custom “W” framed by an open green ring, a design in use since 2002 and refined for the digital era.  The letterform dates back to the club’s early crests and was originally drawn to resemble three blocky towers, a nod to Wolfsburg Castle and the city from which the club takes its name.

The vivid green-and-white palette reflects the club colours adopted in 1945, when players sourced ten green shirts and paired them with white shorts sewn from bed sheets—an improvised choice that became permanent and underpins nicknames like Die Grün-Weißen (“the Green-Whites”).  Today’s smooth, rounded “W” keeps that city reference while presenting Wolfsburg as a clean, contemporary brand within German football.
