US Avellino badge meaning and origin

US Avellino 1912’s badge uses a circular outer ring with the club name and year, enclosing a green-and-white diamond. At the centre is a split wolf’s head, half white on green and half green on white, making the animal the dominant symbol of the badge.

The wolf refers to Avellino’s long-standing nickname, “I Lupi” — “The Wolves.” The green and white colours are the club’s traditional colours, while the full name around the badge preserves the historic “Unione Sportiva Avellino S.P.A. 1912” identity.

The club was founded in 1912, but the badge’s modern identity is strongly tied to 1977, when Avellino architect Quirino Sgrosso designed the famous wolf-in-a-diamond logo. It became the symbol of both the club’s supporters and the wider Irpinia province.

After later corporate changes and refoundations, Avellino restored the historic US Avellino 1912 name and wolf badge, keeping Sgrosso’s design as the core of the club’s visual identity.
