Union Saint-Gilloise badge meaning and origin

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise’s badge is a blue-and-yellow monogram built from the letters “U,” “S” and “G,” topped by a crown carrying the year 1897. The current version also shows a gold star and smaller title stars above the main mark.

The initials stand for Union Saint-Gilloise, the historic Brussels club founded in Saint-Gilles and now based at the Joseph Marien Stadium in Forest. The blue and yellow colours are the club’s traditional colours, while 1897 marks the year the club was founded.

Union Saint-Gilloise was one of Belgium’s dominant early football clubs, winning eleven league titles between 1904 and 1935 and setting a famous 60-match unbeaten league run in the 1930s. The “Royale” title was added after the club received royal recognition.

The modern badge keeps the club’s long-used USG monogram and royal crown structure, with stars reflecting Union’s historic Belgian championship record.
