UC Sampdoria’s badge shows a black silhouette of Baciccia, the club’s famous Genoese sailor figure, inside a shield with diagonal blue, white, red and black bands. The figure is shown in profile with a beard, cap, pipe and wind-blown hair.
Baciccia is a traditional Genoese name linked to Giovanni Battista, and the sailor image reflects Sampdoria’s home city of Genoa, one of Italy’s historic port cities. The colours come from the 1946 merger that created Unione Calcio Sampdoria: blue and white from Andrea Doria, and red, black and white from Sampierdarenese.
Before Baciccia became the club’s main visual symbol, Sampdoria’s shirts used the St George’s cross, a historic emblem of Genoa. The famous sailor profile appeared on Sampdoria shirts from 1980 and became the defining badge of the club’s modern identity.
The result is one of Italian football’s most distinctive crests: a badge that combines Genoese maritime identity with the merged colours and history of Sampdoria.
