Sporting Gijón’s badge uses a red inverted triangular shield with three white vertical stripes, a gold royal crown above it and an intertwined gold “S” and “G” monogram in the centre. The design reflects the club’s red-and-white identity, with the initials standing for Sporting and Gijón.
The crown represents the club’s “Real” title, granted by King Alfonso XIII in 1912. The red-and-white colours are tied to Gijón’s official flag and maritime tradition, and they became central to Sporting’s image as one of Spain’s historic “rojiblanco” clubs.
Sporting was founded in 1905 as Sporting Gijonés and later became Real Sporting Club Gijonés after receiving royal patronage. Early club badges were more traditional shields that combined club and city references.
During the Spanish Second Republic, the royal crown was replaced by a mural crown. The modern badge restored the royal crown and simplified the identity around the red-and-white shield and the “SG” monogram.
