Sport Lisboa e Benfica’s badge shows a golden eagle with outstretched wings standing above a red-and-green ribbon reading “E Pluribus Unum.” Below it sits a red-and-white shield with a football and a blue diagonal band carrying the initials “S.L.B.,” all placed over a grey bicycle wheel.
The eagle, red-and-white shield, football and motto came from Sport Lisboa, founded in 1904. Benfica officially describes the eagle as a symbol of independence, authority and nobility, while “E Pluribus Unum” means “Out of many, one,” expressing unity among members.
The bicycle wheel was added after Sport Lisboa merged with Grupo Sport Benfica in 1908 to form Sport Lisboa e Benfica. It represents cycling, one of Grupo Sport Benfica’s main sports at the time, and turned the combined badge into a visual record of the merger.
Modern versions have refined the eagle, ribbon, shield and wheel, but the badge still preserves the same founding symbols.
