SC Braga badge meaning and origin

Sporting Clube de Braga’s badge is a red-and-white shield topped by a silver mural crown. The centre shows elements from the city of Braga’s coat of arms: two towers, the Portuguese shields, and the figure of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus, with “Sporting” and “Clube de Braga” written around the design.

The badge is closely tied to Braga’s civic identity. Its religious figure, towers and crown come from municipal heraldry, reflecting the city’s long history and its traditional association with the Archbishops of Braga, which also explains the club nickname Os Arcebispos.

SC Braga was founded on 19 January 1921. Its early identity was influenced by Sporting CP, but the club later adopted red and white, first connected to Benfica influence and then famously reshaped into the Arsenal-style kit used from the 1940s.

The modern badge keeps the city-arms structure while using Braga’s red-and-white club colours.
