Pumas UNAM badge meaning and origin

Pumas UNAM’s badge shows a minimalist gold puma head inside a dark-blue rounded triangle with a white outline. The design is one of Mexican football’s most recognizable marks, built around the puma symbol rather than a traditional shield or full club name.

The puma represents the nickname used for UNAM’s sports teams. It became associated with coach Roberto “Tapatío” Méndez, who used the animal as a motivational image for university athletes because of its strength, speed and fighting spirit.

The badge was designed in the 1970s by Manuel “Pajarito” Andrade. Its rounded triangular frame has been interpreted as a reference to the university’s three core functions: teaching, research and cultural diffusion, while the central puma gives the mark its sporting identity.

The blue and gold colours are part of UNAM’s athletic tradition and are strongly associated with Pumas’ home shirts. The result is a simple but powerful identity: university heritage, Mexican football culture and the “Pumas” nickname reduced to one iconic animal head.
