Millwall badge meaning and origin

Millwall’s badge is a navy roundel with a white border, featuring a powerful white lion in mid-leap at its centre and the words “MILLWALL FOOTBALL CLUB – 1885 –” around the edge. The lion has been the club’s defining symbol since the 1930s, when a rampant red lion first appeared on the crest and gradually evolved through versions with single and double lions before the current leaping pose was standardised.

It reflects the “Lions” nickname, adopted after Millwall’s giant-killing run to the FA Cup semi-final in 1900 had newspapers hailing them as “the Lions of the South.” A brief experiment with more generic branding in the 1990s prompted a supporter campaign, and in 2007 fans voted overwhelmingly to restore the classic lion, ensuring that the badge once again matched Millwall’s ferocious, us-against-the-world identity.
