The white rose is the historic emblem of the House of York and today a widely recognised symbol of Yorkshire, underlining the club’s county identity as much as its city roots. Introduced in 1998 as a more “European” shield while retaining the rose first used on the 1980s “rose and ball” crest, the design was cleaned up again in 2002 but has otherwise remained stable, replacing earlier owl, peacock and smiley badges that marked different eras of the club’s history.
