Esteghlal (استقلال) badge meaning and origin

Esteghlal FC’s badge is a blue-and-white circular crest with Persian text, the English name “Esteghlal F.C,” three interlocking ring shapes, the foundation year 1945 with its Persian-calendar equivalent, and two gold stars above the badge.

The blue-and-white colours are Esteghlal’s defining identity, which is why the club is widely associated with nicknames such as the “Blue Boys” and “Capital Blues.” The two gold stars represent Esteghlal’s two Asian club titles, with the club historically winning the Asian Club Championship as Taj/Esteghlal.

Esteghlal was founded in Tehran in 1945 as Docharkheh Savaran, meaning “The Cyclists,” before being renamed Taj, meaning “The Crown,” in 1949. After the 1979 revolution, Taj became Esteghlal, meaning “Independence,” and the modern badge keeps that identity visible through the name, blue palette, 1945 date and championship stars.
