Blackburn Rovers badge meaning and origin

Blackburn Rovers’ badge is a circular crest built around the red Lancashire rose, set on a white field and ringed by a blue-gold border carrying “BLACKBURN ROVERS F.C.” and the founding year 1875, with the Latin motto “Arte et Labore” on a banner below. The crimson rose is lifted from the emblem of the House of Lancaster and has long been the symbol of both the county of Lancashire and the town of Blackburn.

The motto, taken from the town’s coat of arms, translates as “By skill and labour,” neatly capturing the club’s graft-and-quality identity. After earlier eras using a Maltese cross, the town arms and a simpler rose-and-initials crest, the current design—introduced in 1989 and only lightly refined since—has become one of English football’s classic rose badges.
