Arsenal badge meaning and origin

Arsenal’s modern badge is a shield with a sleek gold cannon pointing east across a red field, edged in navy and gold, with the club name “Arsenal” in a clean sans-serif type and no Latin motto. The cannon has been at the heart of the crest since the club’s Woolwich days, borrowed from the local coat of arms to reflect the Royal Arsenal munitions factory and giving rise to the “Gunners” nickname.

Early versions showed three vertical cannons, later simplified to a single gun whose direction switched several times before the current eastward-facing design was fixed in the 2002 rebrand.

The previous heraldic crest, used from 1949, added the Borough of Islington arms and the Latin motto Victoria Concordia Crescit (“Victory Through Harmony”), and remains a fan favourite, so the shift to today’s cleaner, copyrightable logo is still debated among traditionalists.
