Scotland National Team badge meaning and origin

Scotland’s current national team badge is a circular crest with a navy outer ring carrying the word “SCOTLAND” at the top and “EST 1873” at the bottom, flanked by small thistle icons, enclosing a yellow shield with a red lion rampant surrounded by eleven green thistles. The lion is lifted directly from the Royal Banner of Scotland, where the red lion rampant on gold has long symbolised Scottish royalty and national authority.

The thistle is Scotland’s national flower, and here eleven blooms are used to echo the eleven players on the pitch while reinforcing national identity. The “Est 1873” inscription references the founding of the Scottish Football Association, tying the emblem back to one of the world’s oldest governing bodies.
