SC Freiburg badge meaning and origin

SC Freiburg’s badge is a vertical oval split diagonally into black and white, with a stylised bird-like head on the left and an intertwined “SCF” monogram on the right.  The creature is commonly described as a griffin – a mythical half-eagle, half-lion figure that also appears on the Baden-Württemberg coat of arms – linking the club to its regional identity, even if the exact graphic inspiration is debated.

The looping letters below stand simply for Sport-Club Freiburg, turning the crest into a compact name-and-symbol device.  Introduced in 1958 and only subtly redrawn since, the black-and-white oval has become one of the Bundesliga’s most enduring minimalist emblems.
