SC Farense badge meaning and origin

Sporting Clube Farense’s badge is a detailed shield topped by large green “SCF” initials. The upper panel shows elements from Faro’s city arms, including a mural castle, Santa Maria or Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and an eight-pointed gold star. The lower panel uses black and white with a golden lion.

The badge is designed to represent both the club and the city of Faro. The castle and religious figure come from Faro’s municipal heraldry, while the lower black-and-white section represents Farense itself. The lion is used as a symbol of strength, bravery and nobility in the club’s own explanation.

Farense was founded on 1 April 1910 and was influenced by Sporting Clube de Portugal. The club intended to adopt Sporting’s colours, but an early black-and-white photograph made the green appear black, creating Farense’s alvinegro identity.

By the early 1940s, club correspondence already showed a badge combining Faro’s castles, the lion and the SCF initials.
