Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) badge meaning and origin

Olympique Lyonnais’ badge is a gold-edged shield with a red upper panel carrying the white wordmark “OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS,” above a blue field where a large white “L” sits beside a circular white medallion containing a rampant golden lion. The lion is taken from the city of Lyon’s historic coat of arms and flag, making the crest a direct visual link between club and city.

The red, blue and white palette reflects both OL’s traditional colours and the French tricolour, while the gold border adds a heraldic, trophy-like feel. The current design, a refined version of the 1996 shield, has been in use since 2006 and keeps the lion-and-“OL” formula that has defined the club’s emblems for most of its history.
