Go Ahead Eagles badge meaning and origin

Go Ahead Eagles’ badge is a yellow shield with a castellated top, a red oval centre and a black eagle with wings spread standing on a black-and-white football, framed by white scrolls reading “GO AHEAD EAGLES” above and “DEVENTER” below. The eagle is taken from the coat of arms of Deventer, making the crest a direct symbol of the city the club represents.

The suffix “Eagles” was added in 1971 at the suggestion of coach Barry Hughes, inspired by this same heraldic bird and the Adelaarshorst (“eagle’s nest”) stadium name.

The red-and-yellow shield, originally designed by a fan in the early 1970s, uses the club’s home colours, while the battlements and firmly gripped ball emphasise strength and holding the opponent in the eagle’s grasp.
