RC Lens badge meaning and origin

RC Lens’s badge is a pointed white-framed shield with a narrow white banner at the top reading “RACING CLUB DE LENS” and the date “1906,” above a diagonal split field: red on the left with stacked white initials “R C L,” and yellow on the right carrying a black castle flanked by two white fleurs-de-lis. The red-and-yellow “sang et or” colours were adopted in the 1920s and are now inseparable from the club’s identity.

The castle and fleurs-de-lis reproduce the coat of arms of the city of Lens, while the mining lamp integrated into the modern crest pays tribute to the town’s coal-mining past and working-class roots.
