Lazio badge meaning and origin

Lazio’s badge is dominated by a golden eagle in flight above a white shield with a sky-blue border and vertical biancoceleste stripes, topped by the inscription “S.S. LAZIO.” The colours mirror the white and sky blue of the Greek flag, chosen at the club’s foundation to honour the ancient Olympic Games and Lazio’s roots as a multi-sport society.

The eagle, selected by founding member Luigi Bigiarelli, fuses Roman legionary standards with the Aquila of Zeus, symbolising power, victory and giving rise to the nickname Le Aquile.

In recent decades that imagery has been made literal by Olimpia, the live eagle who circles the Stadio Olimpico before kick-off, turning the crest’s mythology into a matchday ritual.
