Hertha BSC badge meaning and origin

Hertha BSC’s badge is a blue-and-white flag with a black pole and outline, carrying the wordmark “HerthaBSC” across the white central band. The design is deliberately simple, using the club’s traditional colours rather than a shield, animal or city emblem.

The flag refers back to the club’s name and colour origin. Hertha was named after a steamship called Hertha, whose blue-and-white funnel inspired the club colours chosen by the founders in 1892.

Hertha was founded on 25 July 1892 as Berliner Fußball Club Hertha 1892. The “BSC” part of the name came later, after the club merged with Berliner Sport-Club in 1923 to form Hertha Berliner Sport-Club.

The flag has long been Hertha’s most recognizable visual symbol. After years with more formal shield-style crests, the club restored the flag badge in 1999, returning to a cleaner identity closely tied to its earliest story.
