Vasco da Gama badge meaning and origin

Vasco da Gama’s badge is a black shield with a thin white outline, crossed by a broad white diagonal sash from upper left to lower right. In the centre sits a white Portuguese carrack with ochre hull, black rigging and curved sails, its main sail bearing a red Cross of Christ; stylised black waves roll beneath the ship, while the white initials “C R” and “V G” appear on either side near the base.

The caravel recalls the voyages of explorer Vasco da Gama, after whom the club was named in 1898, and the cross reproduces the emblem of Portugal’s Order of Christ, long painted on the sails of Portuguese ships during the Age of Discoveries.
