Hamburger SV (HSV) badge meaning and origin

Hamburger SV’s badge is deceptively simple: a black diamond containing a smaller white diamond, all set on a royal-blue rectangle that doubles as a flag. The design dates back to 1919, when the newly formed HSV adopted the flag of one of its predecessor clubs, SC Germania, whose colours were blue, white and black. The blue represents the River Elbe and Hamburg’s maritime character, while the white and black are often linked to the old colours of Prussia and the Hanseatic trading tradition.

Over more than a century the club has resisted adding stars, dates or lettering to the emblem, so the stark diamond-on-blue has become one of German football’s purest and most instantly recognisable symbols—seen both on the badge and as a waving corner flag at the Volksparkstadion.
