Sunderland’s badge is a heraldic shield quartered between red-and-white stripes and two local landmarks, flanked by black lions and topped by a colliery wheel and Latin scroll. The upper left shows Penshaw Monument, a neoclassical folly that dominates the skyline and symbolises the wider Wearside area, while the lower right depicts Wearmouth Bridge, tying the crest to the River Wear and the city itself.
The mining wheel above honours County Durham’s coal heritage and the Monkwearmouth Colliery site on which the Stadium of Light was built, with the motto Consectatio Excellentiae – “in pursuit of excellence” – wrapped around it.
Two lions stand for strength and the club’s Black Cats identity, completing a detailed crest introduced in 1997 to mark the move from Roker Park.
