Sparta Rotterdam badge meaning and origin

Sparta Rotterdam’s badge is a white roundel with a thin black line and gold outer ring, featuring the famous “Spartaan” figure: a player in a red-and-white vertically striped shirt, black shorts and red-and-white hooped socks, frozen mid-kick over a classic panelled football. Around the lower edge, the black wordmark “SPARTA ROTTERDAM” curves along the circle. The striped kit reflects the club’s long-standing colours, copied in 1899 from visiting English side Sunderland and retained ever since.

The player illustration itself was created in 1906 by Sparta winger and painter Willem van Hasselt for a match poster; his dynamic drawing of the striker became known as De Spartaan and gradually evolved into the club’s primary crest, now a badge of honour for supporters and players alike.
