AZ Alkmaar badge meaning and origin

AZ Alkmaar’s badge is a horizontal capsule-shaped emblem with rounded ends, diagonally divided into a red upper half and white lower half, carrying a bold black “AZ” monogram outlined in white at the centre. The simple two-letter mark reflects the club’s full name, Alkmaar Zaanstreek, and the interlocking design symbolises the 1967 merger between Alkmaar ’54 and FC Zaanstreek that created AZ.

The red and white halves are the club’s long-standing colours, closely associated with its home kits and identity. This streamlined oval crest, introduced in the mid-1980s and retained with only minor refinements, replaced earlier shield-style logos and has become one of the most recognisable wordmark-based badges in Dutch football.
