Genoa badge meaning and origin

Genoa’s badge is a rectangular shield with a gold border, the upper band showing a red St George’s Cross on white and the lower half split vertically red and dark blue with a golden griffin at the centre.

The cross repeats the historic flag of the city of Genoa, where St George became patron saint in the Middle Ages and his red-on-white banner was adopted as the civic emblem.

The griffin, borrowed from Genoese heraldry, was formally introduced into the club crest after a 1910 assembly decided to incorporate the city arms into the badge, cementing the link between team and port.  The rossoblù field beneath the cross mirrors the club’s famous quartered colours.
