Botafogo badge meaning and origin

Botafogo’s badge is a stark black shield with a clean white outline, carrying a single five-pointed white star at its centre and no lettering or extra ornaments. This minimal emblem is known as the Estrela Solitária (“Lone Star”), a symbol first used by the Club de Regatas Botafogo rowing team in the late 19th century.

The star originally represented the planet Venus, the morning star seen by rowers training at dawn on Guanabara Bay.  When the rowing club merged with Botafogo Football Club in 1942, the lone white star on black was adopted as the unified crest, becoming the club’s primary identity marker and source of its enduring nickname.
